Rino receives the AC Sanford AwardRino Orsato emigrated to Canada in 1956 from Italy.  Upon arriving in Vancouver he became involved in soccer first as a player and then as a coach, manager, and sponsor.  He has been involved with numerous top level amateur clubs over the years, and starting in the late 1980’s sponsored Westside FC’s premier team which took on the moniker Westside “Rino”.  Over two decades, Westside Rino were crowned Vancouver Metro Soccer League Premier Champions 5 times, Imperial Cup Champions 4 times, BC Provincial Champions 4 times, and Canadian National Champions twice.  They were widely considered the best amateur team in the province, if not the country at the time.

As a result of his extraordinary contributions to soccer Rino has been the recipient of BCSA’s prestigious A.C. Sanford Award, presented to an individual in recognition of exceptional service to soccer in British Columbia over a period of 20 years or more. As well he was presented with Westside FC’s Jay Skelding Award which is awarded to inspirational and dedicated members.

To this day, Rino is still a great supporter of soccer in the community — both amateur and professional.  He is proud to have a club to call his own, Rino’s Vancouver SC, but also regularly attends other contests in the local VMSL circuit and Whitecaps FC matches.  When Rino is not out watching a soccer game, he can be found at Rino Shoe Renu located inside Dayton Boots at 2250 E. Hastings St. in Vancouver.
